Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo
Description
The Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo (BAMZ) is one of the island’s most unique attractions, combining an aquarium, natural history museum and zoo all in one waterfront location in Flatts Village. Founded in 1926, it’s also one of the oldest aquariums in the world and remains an important centre for conservation, education and research in Bermuda. The facility focuses heavily on island ecosystems, so you’ll find animals and marine life from Bermuda as well as other islands around the world including Madagascar, Australia and the Caribbean.
Inside the aquarium, visitors can get an up-close look at colorful reef fish, sharks, sea turtles and one of the world’s northernmost coral reef systems recreated in a massive living exhibit. Outside, the zoo features everything from flamingos and lemurs to giant tortoises and playful otters, with several walk-through exhibits that make the experience feel surprisingly immersive. The museum section helps connect it all back to Bermuda itself, explaining the island’s geology, wildlife and fragile marine environment in a way that’s easy to explore even for casual visitors.
BAMZ is especially popular with families (especially on rainy days), but it’s just as worthwhile for adults looking for something different from the beach for a few hours. The setting in Flatts Village adds to the experience too, with beautiful water views, nearby restaurants and one of the island’s most scenic stretches of road right outside the entrance. For visitors wanting to better understand Bermuda beyond the pink sand beaches, this is one of the best places on the island to do it.
